Congratulations to Shawn Ku & Beautiful Boy
Along with all the great press reviews Beautiful Boy has been receiving, and being snapped up by Anchor Bay films, more good news is being reported by TIFF.net.
The Prize of the International Critics (FIPRESCI Prize) for the Discovery programme is awarded to Shawn Ku for Beautiful Boy (USA). The jury remarked: “This film shows its audience that in a world of chaos and insanity, humanity is the only key to life.”
I have to say guys, this film cannot get general release soon enough!
Success for Beautiful Boy
Film festivals are a great way to pick up distribution for your movie. Buyers not only have a chance to see the movie, but they get to see it with an audience and gauge reaction.
Apparently, Beautiful Boy has flown off the shelf at Toronto International Film Festival, with the English-speaking rights being snapped up by Anchor Bay Films in a alleged 7 figure deal with Paradigm. The deal includes a P & A commitment (prints and advertising). Foreign will be handled by Lightening Entertainment.
The film premiered on Sunday and has caused much buzz since, due in no small way to the strong lead performances. The good news for us is this means that, unlike Unthinkable, this film should get a theatrical release.
It seems that there has also been success for ‘Submarine’, a one time future project of Michael Sheen’s, but he had to drop out due to other commitments. The film’s writer and director, Richard Ayoade (IT Crowd, Mighty Boosh), must be very pleased that it has been bought by The Weinstein Company, the distributors behind such films as Inglorious Basterds, The Road, and Nowhere Boy.
