| Daniel, a bright young irrigation engineer sent to build a dam in an unnamed Balkan state, is caught between upland and valley people as he discovers that where he wants to dig is an ancient burial site.
He is sincere and nervous, as he worryies about the grave illness of his 5-month-old daughter and the pleas of his wife, Cathy, back in England. He begins to crack up as his marriage, family and job disintegrate around him, and slips into a tortured introspection. He is told of an old man who can cure his dangerously ill daughter, so he sets off on a journey into the mountains. He is asked to make a sacrifice, simple yet for him almost impossible: to give up smoking… |
