| Synopsis:
Ion, the foundling caretaker of the temple of Apollo, meets Creusa, queen of Athens. She tells him of a “friend” who was seduced by Apollo, then gave birth to a boy and later abdoned the child. She wants to ask the oracle if the child is alive. Some time later, Creusa’s husband Xuthus also arrives at the oracle because he and Creusa are childless. The oracle tells him that the first person he will meet after leaving the oracle will be his child. This is Ion. Creusa then becomes quite jealous of her husband’s “son” and tries to kill him. Her attempt fails and Ion confronts her. Before he can kill her, however, it comes to light that they are mother and son because Ion is the child Creusa abondoned many years ago. Ion forgives Creusa and they return to Athens with Xuthus. This play probably only ran for one night, as it was a National Theatre Workshop |
