| Jeff Bridges reprises his role as Kevin Flynn in the sequel to the 1982 sci-fi classic.
Since the end of the last film, Encom corporation have been hard at work on the X-Net – the solution to the worlds internet problems. When the world suffers from a global internet virus attack, X-Net is seen as the solution. Unfortunately, this attack has been engineered by its CEO named Sinclair. His son Sam, now the controlling shareholder following his father’s mysterious disappearance, takes little interest in the company. He is visited by Alan Bradley, a family friend and ENCOM executive. Bradley asks Sam to investigate a page that came from his father’s old arcade. While exploring the arcade, Sam discovers a concealed computer lab and accidentally digitizes himself to the Grid, the virtual world inside the computer. Sam is captured and forced to participate in the games. His opponent, Rinzler, spots him as a user rather than a program and takes him to see Clu, a digital copy of his father, and now the leader of this virtual society. Sam is challenged to a Light Cycle race and would have been killed were it not for a timely rescue by Quorra, who takes him to an off-grid hideout, and reunites him with his father. Flynn explained he created Clu to help him build a perfect world. Flynn discovered a series of sentient self produced programs, calling them ISOs. Clu felt that these programs were imperfect, so betrayed Flynn and destroyed them all. Flynn’s virtual companion, Tron, sacrificed himself enabling Flynn to flee to the Outlands, where he has been hiding for the past 25 years. The portal to the outside world had remained closed until Sam reopened it. Sam resolves to make it back to the outside world, and delete Clu. Quorra takes him to the End Of Line Club where they look for a program calledZuse, who is rumoured to be able to help Sam escape. The flamboyant club owner, Castor, reveals himself to be Zuse, but betrays Sam and Quorra to Clu’s guards. They escape, but not before Quorra is injured, and Zuse steals Flynn’s Identity disc. Knowing this can be used as a master key for the grid, Zuse tries to bargain with Clu, but is in turn betrayed. Clu claims the disc, and destroys the club. Sam, Flynn and Quorra stow away on a Solar Sailer heading towards the portal, and Flynn heals Quorra, revealing her to be the last of the ISOs. Unbeknownst to them, the Solar Sailer’s course is diverted, taking them instead to a massive carrier-ship where they encounter Rinzler. Flynn recognises Rinzler to be a reprogrammed Tron, and while he is fighting with Quorra. Sam rescues Quorra and recovers his father’s disc. The trio then capture an aerial shuttle, but Clu, Rinzler and his guards follow them on Light Jets. Rinzler moves to destroy the shuttle, but makes eye contact with Flynn and his original identity of Tron resurfaces. Tron deliberately collides into Clu’s vehicle, destroying them both. However, Clu wrestles Tron’s baton away from him and creates a new Light Jet and once again pursues Flynn. Sam, Flynn and Quorra finally reach the portal, only to find Clu blocking their path. After attempting to reason with Clu, Flynn sacrifices himself to end the impasse, pulling Clu toward him and causing the two to merge, while Sam and Quorra use Flynn’s disc to travel through the portal back to the real world. Flynn and Clu merge, causing a massive explosion that destroys them both, as well as Clu’s army. Back in the basement of Flynn’s arcade, Sam backs up the system onto his flash drive and powers it off. He then meets Alan and tells him that he will start working at ENCOM, and, as the controlling interest shareholder, he will name Alan chairman of the board. Quorra meets Sam outside, and the two take off on his motorcycle. The movie ends with Sam showing Quorra the sunrise she has longed to see. |
