Michael Sheen voices Kenneth Tynan reviews for BBC Radio 4
Kenneth Tynan was an influential and controversial theatre critic. BBC Radio 4 Extra recently repeated a series of short programmes, first aired last year, about his theatre reviews from 1944 through to 1962. David Horovitch talks about the writer, and extracts of his writings are read out by Michael Sheen.
All are available as downloadable MP3s by clicking the buttons below, or from the Download section.
Part 1. Apathy – Michael Sheen and David Horovitch read some of the critic’s outspoken articles.
Part 2. The Voice Of The Young – The ecstatic 1956 review of John Osborne’s kitchen-sink drama Look Back in Anger.
Part 3. Dodging The Ban – The critic’s passionate campaign against stage censorship was fearless and funny.
Part 4. A Verbal Wizard – Reviews for The Entertainer, A Taste of Honey and heralding Harold Pinter.
Part 5. An Open Letter – The critic’s surprisingly negative 1962 review about his idol Laurence Olivier.
