Michael Sheen wins Best Film Actor in Variety Club Awards

Michael Sheen scooped the Best Film Actor in the Variety Club Showbiz Awards 2009.

The Variety Club, which celebrates its Diamond Jubilee this year, is one of the UK’s longest running charities dedicated to sick, disabled and disadvantaged children and young people.  Every year they honour the most talented individuals from the world of entertainment and last night, at The Variety Club’s 57th Annual Showbiz Awards 2009, in London’s West End, stars came together to show their support for the charity.

Other stars receiving awards included Kevin Spacey and Sir Ian McKellan.

The show will be broadcast on FIVE on Sunday 22 November at 1535 GMT.

    Congratulations Michael! A well deserved win I feel. You are doing well for awards this year – I hope this bodes well for the Oscars. Am convinced you will get a Best Actor nomination.

    Well done to Mr Sheen of course, but I’m a bit puzzled – at the Variety Club Awards on November 16th Michael was apparently unable to attend to receive his award because he was in Los Angeles, USA, and yet he was then able to be in London on November 19th to be on the Graham Norton Show, just three days later. Couldn’t he have made the effort to fly over a couple of days earlier to receive the Variety Club award, given the status of this organisation and the fact they had been good enough to honour him?

      I believe that he was unable to attend the recording of the Variety Club Awards as he was appearing at the premiere of New Moon in Los Angeles, as well as having other publicity commitments linked with the release of New Moon. I am sure that if he had not been contractually obliged to be in LA, then he would have been there, so it is unfair to criticise him for this.
